In the context of astrology, Sun and Moon are considered planets. In this setting of astrology, Earth is positioned at the center with the Sun moving around it in an apparent circular path called the ecliptic. This imaginary line is a great circle, and it encircles a belt of constellations along its way and is together known as the 'Zodiac'.
The zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts, with one constellation occupying each part. The zodiac signs derive their names from the name of the constellations occupying each slice of the circle. Planet transit is the planets' movement through the twelve zodiac signs. Starting with the sign Aries, the Sun completes its journey through the zodiac in 365 days.

What is a planet transit? Why is transit important in astrology?
Transit, by definition, is the act, process, or instance of pass over or movement. In terms of astrology, planet transit means the movement or passage of the planets, the Sun and the Moon in its orbit or, more importantly, through the 12 signs of the zodiac as it progresses (sometimes retrograde) in its orbit.
All planets in the cosmos are in a constant state of motion. When you capture and plot the position of these planets at the exact moment, and for the specific location of your birth, you get your natal chart or birth chart. And your natal chart tells you the zodiac where your planets are posited at the time of your birth. The planets move through and exit one zodiac to enter the next sign as they continue their movement.
Planet Transit Timing - Tropical Vs Sidereal
There are two main systems for measuring planetary transit timing - the tropical system and the sidereal system. The tropical system (western) is based on the Earth's orbit around the Sun, with transits happening when a planet crosses the Sun's ecliptic longitude. The sidereal system (vedic), on the other hand, is based on the Earth's rotation around its axis, with transits happening when a planet crosses a specific star's celestial longitude. As a result, the two systems often give different results for when a transit will occur.
How long does a planet transit in a sign?
The length of planet transit in a zodiac sign depends on the distance of planets as viewed from Earth and their motion (direct to retrograde). The time planets take to transit a sign varies from a couple of days for inner planets like the Moon to several years for outer planets like Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
Pluto, the outermost and slowest moving planet, takes 248 years to transit through all 12 zodiac signs. The fastest moving planet is Mercury which completes a transit through all 12 zodiac signs in under 88 days. The Moon completes a transit through the zodiac signs in just 30 days, changing signs every 2.5 days.
Planet | Changes Zodiac in# | Transits entire zodiac in# | Orbits Sun in | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Moon | 2½ days | 30 days | - | No retrograde |
Mercury | 15-65 days | 1 year | 88 days | When retrograde, Mercury's transit in a sign may last around 65 days |
Venus | 24 days | 10-13 months | 225 days | When retrograde, Venus's transit in a sign lasts upto 125 days |
Sun | 30 days | 365 days | - | No retrograde |
Mars | 40-60 days | 1.9 years | 687 Days | When retrograde, Mars's transit in a sign lasts upto 100-200 days |
Jupiter | 50-150 days | 12 years | 12 years | When retrograde, Jupiter's transit in a sign may last around 390 days |
Saturn | 2½ years | 29.5 years | ||
Uranus | 2 months to 7 years | 84 years | 84 years | |
Neptune | 3 months to 14 years | 165 years | 165 years | |
Pluto | 19-20 years | 248 years | 248.5 years |
