Feel that stiffness around your muscles after a good workout, that's a good sign on the 1st day and the 2nd day. But do you feel the same pain even after a whole month, well then let ginger do the work of giving your muscles a relief? Researchers have found out that daily ginger consumption can decrease pain caused by exercise.

For centuries, ginger root was used as a folk remedy for a wide range of illnesses ranging from colds and stomach aches. It is believed that heating ginger, as done through the process of cooking, might boost its pain-relieving effects. 

Researchers carried out an experiment by examining the effects of 11 days of raw and heat-treated ginger supplementation on pain caused by muscles. Around 34 and 40 volunteers took part in the study. They consumed capsules containing 2 grams of either raw or heated ginger or placebo for 11 consecutive days.  

On the 8th day, they performed 10 extensions of the elbow flexors using a heavyweight that was made to induce moderate muscle injury to the arm. The arm function, inflammation pain and a biochemical involved in pain were analyzed prior to the study and three days later after the individuals took up the exercise. The results showed -

  • Daily ginger supplementation reduced the exercise-induced pain by 25 percent.
  • The effects were not enhanced by giving ginger the heat treatment.

The study was carried out by Patrick O’Connor a professor in the College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and a team of researchers.

Food experts and even chefs from all around the world have considered ginger as a great way to add in that extra bit of taste to both sweet and savory dishes. But did you know that ginge could also help prevent the problem of asthma . Whoever thought that consuming ginger could actually help in clearing a breathing problem, huh? Researchers have found that purified components of the spicy root also may have properties that can help asthma patients breathe more easily? 

What is asthma?

Asthma is characterized by bronchoconstriction, a tightening of the bronchial tubes that carries air into and out of the lungs. Broncho-dilating medications called beta-agonists are one among the most common types of asthma medications and function by relaxing the airway smooth muscle(ASM) tissues.

Researchers carried out a study where they took human ASM tissue samples and caused the samples to contract the illness by exposing them to acetylcholine, a neuro-transmitting compound which caused broncho-constriction. Next, the researchers mixed β-agonist medication with 3 separate components of ginger, namely 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 6 shogaol. The contracted tissues were then exposed to each of these 3 mixtures and the relaxation responses were recorded and compared. 

The results that when the tissues were treated with the combination of ginger components along with the β-agonist medication, displayed significantly greater relaxation. 

When taken together, these data showed that the ginger constituents 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 6 shogaol have a much greater effect with the β-agonist medication I relaxing the airway smooth muscle tissues. This proved that these ginger compounds may provide additional relief of asthma symptoms when used in a combination with the β-agonist.

The study was carried out by Elizabeth Townsend, Ph.D., a post-doctoral research fellow in the Columbia University Department of Anesthesiology and a team of researchers.

A research study found out that Ginger supplements reduced markers of colon inflammation, suggesting that this supplement may have the potential to act as an agent in preventing colon cancer.

Researchers carried out an experiment where they selected 30 individuals and randomly assigned them to two grams of ginger root supplements per day or placebo for 28 days. After this period, the researchers measured the standard levels of colon inflammation and found statistically significant reductions in most of these markers. 

The inflammation has been implicated in previous studies as a precursor to colon cancer. According to researchers, this method or treatment of treating colon cancer may be highly preferred by people as they are always looking for a way to prevent cancer that is non-toxic in nature. This can also help a lot of people improve their quality of life in a much more cost-effective way.

The study was carried out b Suzanna M.Zick, N.D., M.P.H a research assistant professor at the University of Michigan Medical School and a team of researchers.

Ginger may help fight off deadly Infant Diarrhea !!

A study found out that the famous spice ginger can now act as a treatment for bacteria-induced diarrhea, one of the leading causes of infant death in several developing countries. These findings could pave the way for an inexpensive, ways-to-obtain alternative to drug therapy for the condition.

A study was conducted using laboratory mice which showed that an extract of ginger successfully blocked the toxin responsible for diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli or E.coli. This accounted for 210 million cases of diarrhea worldwide and also caused 380,000 deaths yearly. It was also observed that zingerone, a component of ginger was the likely compound to be responsible for the effect. 

Researchers concluded by saying that ginger and its derivatives may be effective herbal supplements for the clinical treatment of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli diarrhea. 

However additional studies are still being conducted to determine the effective doses of ginger needed and whether if it is safe for infants who may experience unexpected side-effects from taking large doses.

The study was carried out by Chien Yun Hsiang and a team of researchers in Taiwan.
