Uma Maheshwara Vratham

Umamaheshwara Vrata, also known as Uma Maheshvara vratham is one of the holy astha maha vartams that are mentioned in the Skandha Puraan. This vrata is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is observed for marital bliss. According to the traditional Kannada calendar, the Umamaheshwara vrata is observed on the poornima or the full moon day in the month of Bhadrapad. However as per the Tamil calendar this vrata falls during the month of Puratassi. Devotees can observe the umamaheshwara vratham either on Ashtami (eight day of the Shukla Paksha), the Chaturdashi (14th day of the Shukla Paksha) or during Poornima (full moon day) or Ammavasi (no moon day). Some communities in different parts of the country also observe the Umamaheshwara vrata on the poornima of the Hindu month of Karthikai that is during mid-November till mid-December, when the Sun moves into the Vruchchika rashi. The day of Kartik Poornima is known to be very auspicious for performing any religious activity.

Earlier the Umamaheshwara vrata was observed for a period of 12 years on the poornima (full moon day) in the month of Bhadrapad. During this vrata the devotees make a metal idol of Uma and Lord Maheshwara (Parvati and Shiva) and worship it on that day. After devotedly worshipping for twelve years, on the final year, the metal murti is then donated to any Lord Shiva temple.

Rituals of the Umamaheshwara Vrata:

• On the day of poornima, the devotees must get up early. After finishing the daily chores, the murti of Uma Maheshvara made from silver or gold is worshipped with full devotion. Various sacred offerings are made to the Lord.
• Later the idol of Umamaheshwara is anointed with ‘panchmrutam’ (a mixture of fruits and sugar) along with other substances. The idol is then honoured with ‘tambulam’ and other gestures of salutations. The devotees observe fast all during the day and eat only one meal after sunset. The prasad comprising of sweets and fruits is then shared with family members and other devotees. The day is spent medicating about the Supreme Lord Shiva and the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ is enchanted with dedication all day long.
• On the next day, after worshipping the idol of Umamaheshwara is then handed over to a ‘Shivanyani’. The day after the completion of Umamaheshwara vrata in the Bhadraprada, the devotees worship their dead ancestors. This period of fortnight dedicated to the Pitru or dead ancestors is referred as the ‘Shraddh Paksha’ or ‘Pitrhu Paksha’.

The Umamaheswara vrata is observed for attainment of one’s desires and to free life from all sorrows and unhappiness. It has been known that the observer of this vrata gets all the material benefits during his/her lifetime and afterwards attain liberation. The Umamaheshwara vrata is also observed by couples for a happy and long married life. The story or the legend associated with Umamaheshwara vrata is mentioned in the sacred Skanda Purana under the Umamaheshwara Vrata Mahatmya. The timing of the puja and the mythological Gods or Goddess who performed the Umamaheshwara Vrata is mentioned under the Shiva Rahasya of Skanda Purana, along with other details. Dhiranabindhu, a blind muni got back his eyesight after observing this vrata. Lord Vishnu performed this vrata during Krishnavataram for many children. By dedicatedly observing this Umamaheshwara vrata, Lord Brahma married Gayatri, Sage Vashishtha received kamdhenu for performing yagnya, Lord Indra got his son jayantan and King Janak got his daughter sita. Sudharman, a dumb minded man who was always mocked by his stupidity observed the umamaheshwara vrata with complete devotion. Lord Shiva then blessed him with the grace of Goddess of knowledge, Saraswati and later he became a renowned pandit. With these illustrations it is a declared fact that the observer of Umamaheswara vrata will be bestowed with wealth and finally gets the path of liberation.
