Shula Vrata

The Shula vrata is considered to be amongst the eight maha vratam mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. This vrata is devoted to Lord Shiva and is performed to seek His blessings. The Shula vrata is kept during the Tamil month of Pushya, that is, the months of mid-December to mid-January according to the Gregorian calendar, on the new moon day. During this time the Sun resides in the Makara rashi, which is the Capricorn sign. Shula vrata is primarily observed in the southern states of India and devotees keep this maha vratam with full fervour and devotion.

Rituals of the Shula Vrata:

• On the day of Shula vrata, that is, the new moon day of the auspicious Thai month, the observer of this vrata should get up early. After finishing the day-to-day rituals, the observer should sit and pray to the form of Lord Shiva holding the ‘shula’ (the three headed spear).
• On this day, Goddess Shakti (Parvati) is also prayed and given equal importance. The murti of the Lord is anointed with ‘abhishekam’, a ritual in which God is bathed with milk, curd, ghee, sugar and honey.
• Following this, special offerings called as ‘naivedyam’ is prepared and offered to Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati. All the ceremonies of the Shula vrata must be performed with complete devotion and the devotees must spend the day praising and listening to the glories of Lord Shiva.
• On this day it is also essential to visit a Lord Shiva temple and worship there. The performer of the Shula vrata should also make some form of donations to those disciples of Lord Shiva who adorn ‘rudraxa’ beads around the neck. The devotees keep fast and food is eaten only once all through the day along with other devotees.
• One who observes Shula vrata is blessed by Lord Shiva and he/she will easily win over their enemies. The observer is also bestowed with good health and will remain free from serious diseases all his/her life. They will live a joyful and contended family life and prosperity and happiness will never part ways from them. Not only this, the devotees will ultimately get united wit Lord Shiva and reach the Shiva lok, Kailasa Dham. Such is the glory of the Shula vrata.

Even during the ancient times, Hindu mythological Gods, Goddesses and holy saints observed this vratham for attainment of their desires. Lord Vishnu observed this powerful vrata himself to defeat the demon called Kalanemi. He again performed this maha vratam to cure himself from a terrible head ache. Even the renowned Parshu Rama kept this vrata to please Lord Shiva and he could then easily conquer his enemy, Karta Viryarjuna. Lord Brahma also observed the Shula vrata to cure his painful stomach pain. These illustrations tell about the significance of Shula vrata.
