About Indian

Indian is an American brand of motorcycles established in 1901. In 1897 George M. Hendee founded a bicycle production company called the Hendee Manufacturing Company and later it was renamed to the ‘Indian’. In 1901 Hendee hired gasoline engine powered bikes to pace bicycle race. The powerful and reliable machine that he created established the company’s reputation and it followed the establishment of the company Indian at Springfield. In 1906, the first V-twin factory race bike was built. The 1910s were an era of technological innovations and advancements for Indian Motorcycles, including a leaf-spring front fork, 2-speed transmission, swing arm rear suspension and the legendary 1000cc Powerplus engine. In 1920 Indian introduced several iconic motorcycles, Indian Scout (the first, reliable manoeuvrable bike), followed by the Chief and the Prince. During the Great Depression, the company continued its success story and in 1940s during the First World War the company served the US Army by producing Model 841. The Indian saw a decline in sales and operation during 1970s.

In 1988 the company resurrected and resumed its production. The 2010s have been a decade full of exciting development and growth for Indian Motorcycle. Through technological innovations Indian built a bright future upon the legendary past.
