In 1929, František Janeček founded a company in Prague, Czech, named Jawa, to manufacture motorcycles. The first Jawa bike had a 170 cc two-stroke engine and became very popular among youngsters. Later, the company started making 250 cc and 300 cc bikes with more sophisticated four-stroke engines. This engineering brilliance gave the company an excellent reputation. The Jawa brand was sold in India under the Ideal Jawa brand beginning in 1960. In 1973, they were also sold under the 'Yezdi' brand. However, the production eventually stopped in 1996. In 1997 Jawa Moto was formed, which the original Jawa. Mahindra & Mahindra, through its subsidiary Classic Legends Private Limited (CLPL), signed a licensing deal in October 2016 to launch motorbikes under the JAWA brand name in India and other East Asian countries. On November 15, 2018, Classic Legends launched Jawa, Forty-Two, and Pérák in India. Today Jawa offers a wide range of bikes for both beginners and experienced riders.
