Amavasya means New Moon Day. In Sanskrit, the translation is as follows: "a" means "Not present" or "Absence of", "ma" is another word for the Moon in Sanskrit, and "vasya"/"vas" translates to "to be put on" or "to dwell". Putting all together, we get the word Amavasya, which roughly translates to "No Moon Day" or No Moon dwelling in the sky.
